Best Covers albums
by dihansse

albums with covers from different artists, albums with covers from one band/artist (aka tribute albums) and the likes in principle not but sometimes appearing in my normal year charts. Extra points of course for great original versions of already great original songs.

This is one of the 4 American Recording cover albums where Cash tackled different kinds of genres in his own way of course helped by producer Rick Rubin. As in the three other albums, these are fairly original renditions of those tracks were it not for two tracks which dwarve their originals: Personal Jesus from Depeche Mode and especially Hurt, which already was a very special track by NIN. Especially the latter is the most breakable piece of music I have ever come across especially if accompanied by the heartbreaking video clip. Quote from an interview with Trent Reznor: "Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor admitted that he was initially "flattered" but worried that "the idea of Cash covering 'Hurt' sounded a bit gimmicky," but when he heard the song and saw the video for the first time, Reznor said he was deeply moved and found Cash's cover beautiful and meaningful, going as far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore." In many cases definitive and fiercer versions of the main classic punk songs. [First added to this chart: 09/12/2020]

The Carpenters were maybe sometimes a bit cheesy but nobody can deny that Karen Carpenter had a fantastic voice and the the songwriting beneath all the cheese was sometimes great. This is proven by this tribute album where a large number of my favorite artists are covering a large number of their songs. The example that immediately springs to mind is of course Superstar by Sonic Youth but the best cover in my opinion is Let Me Be The One by Matthew Sweet. [First added to this chart: 09/12/2020]

The voice of Susanna Hoffs and the great guitar sound of Matthew Sweet are a perfect match here. But the best thing here is their eclectic choice of a variety of genres. In principle they stay fairly close to the original versions but their quality as performers give a special quality to the tracks anyway. Which also makes that my favorite tracks here are also my favorite tracks of the album (which is in fact already a compilation of three former cover albums): And Your Bird Can Sing by The Beatles, Sunday Morning by VU, Sitting Still by R.E.M., Bell Bottom Blues by The Cream, I Can See For Miles by The Who and of course the very special version of Marquee Moon. This is a special tribute album because it both contains a number of Daniel Johnston tracks delivered in his own quirky way and covers of the same songs by artists who thought highly of him. A good way to show that beneath all that quirkyness, some great songs were hidden. [First added to this chart: 09/12/2020]

A great choice of a number of best metal tracks (although not all are really metal) of all time going through the Metallica treatment and in most instances they succeed in a great way. In many instances I knew the Metallica versions before I discovered the originals which meant that in many cases I still like the Metallica version better. The best tracks here are Whisley In The Jar by Thin Lizzy, Tuesday Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd, The More I See by Discharge and Overkill by Motörhead. [First added to this chart: 09/12/2020]
