Top 8 Music Albums of 2009
by Junomoogmello

This chart is under construction. There may not be many entries given 2009 wasn't a particularly inspiring year for new music...

Not in my opinion anyway. The albums I have included are worthy though.

An excellent progressive album which writhes and turns like a snake on hot sand! The musicians in this supergroup are clearly at the top of their game. It never sounds like everyone is scrambling for the limelight which can sometimes be a trend with supergroups. The shared vocal duties between the different vocalists keep it fresh. I know some people get hung up on the over religious lyrics but it doesn't spoil the experience for me, in fact I tend to listen to the instrumentation more than the lyrics anyway. Due to the fact that Porcupine Tree has output so many fantastic albums prior to this, many refer to this as a weak offering. I don't necessarily agree. If you listen to this album in it's own right it is still a very progressive album and quite different from earlier works. Time Flies is equally up there with Lazarus and Arriving Somewhere but Not Here. I think the album has a generally harder and perhaps colder edge, not surprising by the title and inner cover art. For those who find it weaker, maybe give it a few more spins. [First added to this chart: 04/03/2022]

This isn't an album that I would have particularly sought out, as my U2 collection tends to be their 'classic, output, i.e. 'War', 'Unforgettable Fire', 'Joshua Tree' etc. Having just received this for a Birthday present, I am really surprised and impressed by the overall 'freshness' the album provides. It is quite different from the other U2 albums I own but I really like it and can see myself listening to this a lot. [First added to this chart: 01/30/2022]

Excellent modern Prog album. Quite an unusual vocal for the style of music but it works. [First added to this chart: 01/14/2024]

Great 'modern' psychedelic album, itself nearly 15 years old! Shame this was never released on vinyl, but then, in 2009, vinyl wasn't hip! I don't listen to CD's much so it isn't played like it was when I first bought it. Lots of Mellotron!

I had forgotten how good this album is. What I like about Lacuna Coil is the way they draw back the heaviness for the male-female vocal interplay. Spellbound is the standout track. Great Italian metal with at times, a toe in the progressive ocean! [First added to this chart: 01/12/2024]

This is actually a boxset of their first three albums. With a cover to rival Black Sabbath's debut but that is where the comparison ends. The boxset houses Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse. Opeth do produce some stunning music but I have to be honest, I absolutely detest the growl, snarl, whatever you want to call it, I just don't get it, for me it ruins the listening experience. The low mark is because of the growl/snarl.
Best tracks on My Arms Your Hearse- Credence and Remember Tomorrow- No growl/snarl.
Best tracks on Orchid- Sihouette- No growl/snarl.
Best tracks on Morningrise- To Bid You Farewell- No growl/snarl.
