They've contributed a lot of music. I'm not a big fan besides The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, but they're a good band. A tad overrated, but stll, a great band.

This site is set up for music lovers, and we should all realise by now that (thankfully) we have different tastes else there would be much less music in the world.
I've enjoyed U2 since the 80's although haven't heard too much of their post 90's stuff. But since 2016 I have been catching lots of bands and albums called out on this site - some of it lands with me right away and some takes 5-6 listens of the album to land and some just isn't gonna make it with me personally. But I can respect and understand why it might for others.
The decision of who's the best will be emotive and it will always be debateable the particular order. But I would suggest that a band like U2 should be in the mix.
You look at the top 20 artists/bands are generally all with a big consistent back catalogue - Nirvana being the exception with only 3 studio albums - over a long period of time. Not everything they did was brilliant but they all have 3-4 brilliant albums in amongst it that either defined a period in time or took music in a new direction.
There's no point saying any top players on the list are rubbish - they are clearly not, it's just not your particular cup of tea. Certainly debate the order and say they don't float your particular boat and accept to many, many folk those listed are recognised and loved. Peace and love.

It looks like U2's legendary status is gonna be the subject of much discussion until the end of time. I think most people will agree that they've made some pretty good music over the years, but personally, I'm one of those who think they're not THAT good, and I can't help but rolling my eyes whenever I see they're ranked as the 16th greatest band of all time.

However, I also roll my eyes when I see Radiohead ranking second, and Nirvana ranking ninth, but hey, what are you gonna do? A lot of people clearly disagree with me, otherwise they wouldn't be there. And that's ok, guys. We can't all love the same bands.

I never understood why this band is ranked higher than legendary artists like Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and even Bruce Springsteen. U2's discography is so mediocre. Out of all the 14 studio albums they've released, only Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree are enjoyable from start to finish. Not only they didn't release any decent records in over 2 decades, but most of their albums have way too much filler, and usually only the well-known singles stand out. I can name over 40 underrated musicians that could have replaced this band's spot on the top ranked artists chart.

While I won't deny they have some great albums and some great singles, these guys are definitely in the top 5 most overrated bands of all time. After all the time I've spent reading about U2 and listening to their music, I still haven't heard one coherent argument saying that these guys deserve to be called one of the greatest bands of all time.
