I guess if Maddox writes an article about how much U2 sucks, it's suddenly cool to say so w/o having heard their albums a few times each. of the huge rock bands that hit their stride in the 80's (the cure, the smiths, REM, GNR, talking heads), U2 arguably has the best catalogue with Boy, War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, All That You Can't Leave Behind, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.... the other huge bands of the 80's went on to release the embarrassingly bad or nothing at all, so how are any of them better than U2?

the haters are either just echoing Maddox or they're sick of hearing U2's singles on the radio all day. solution: don't listen to the radio. that makes YOU bad, not U2.

they're not a singles band just b/c that's all you've heard from them.

if you can't name any hard songs by U2, don't comment.

I know U2 is one of those artists that you just "have to like" but they don't really do it for me, personally. I think they have some alright records (Achtung Baby, War, Joshua Tree) and their instrumentation is well produced, but I just don't connect to them on a personal and emotional reaction. If you like them, I can see why. They certainly have an appeal to them, but they just aren't my personal favorite. I just find them "alright".

One of the best bands of the 80's & 90's War, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby & Zooropa are great albums and show a band evolving. Bono seems to get peoples backs up I couldn't care less what his politics are I only want to judge the music and they have consistently made good albums over the years and deserve all the praise they receive.

It honestly isn't my cup of tea... I really like Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree but I don't think the rest of their work is as good as these 2.

Hmmm... seems since I left the site and came back there's been a lot of U2 hate. It's funny they used to be ranked 11th on the site. I guess their old work all of a sudden sucked because of the iTunes free release? The logic...

You know what I love about this band is they've transformed their sound about 5 times 1)Boy-War 2) Unforgettable Fire-Joshua Tree 3)Rattle and Hum 4) Achtung Baby-Pop 5) ATYCLB-today... and while some eras were better than others, they still remained on top of their game. That many changes in a band's identity would kill most bands. And they nailed it, imo. Each era had solid songs, huge selling albums, and heck, even the 360 tour was the most attended concert.

I just don't get the U2 hate. They are totally a top 20 artist of all time and if you don't understand why... you probably haven't given them enough time or even listened to them at all and were an asshole and rated them a 30 them with no intelligence.

ledemoncleaner's comment is totally respectable.

Late U2 lacks the good new wave sound that made the band big with The Joshua Tree, but for me the first albums are all masterpieces.
People should hear those

Great band in the 80s - one of the pinnacles of the early Alt Rock movement. Things went south in the 90s. Bono is too preachy. I disagree with some of the comments below that say Arcic Monkeys and The Strokes are better. I find U2 at their worst to be more interesting than anything on Is This It, and most of Arctic Monkeys is cliche noise rock to me (with some good selections here and there)

Isn't it refreshing to hear multi millionaires preaching for the anti-povety movement. I don't know how much of the savings Boneo makes from his tax arrangements, but I'll bet my house he lives to a better standard of living from what he keeps for himself than I live on. So Bono, pay up or shut up. Annoyingly I quite like U2.

I like them, but they aren't even near to be the 15th best band of all time.

Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, or Talking Heads are much better than them...plus other 21th century bands like The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys or Muse. The list could go on and on...
