Sessions of a live music junkie 2021 by Purplepash

The live music I have seen in 2021.
I am lucky to be living somewhere where live music is happening again. Admittedly at this stage no international acts but unlike the end of 2020 at least we are getting national acts now, not just local bands. Still haven't seen much this year though. As I'm getting older it's getting harder to find the time and motivation to go out.

Edit: state border closures throughout the year put a stop to seeing much live music :'(

Bands without an album on BEA:

Tether - 16th Apr
Noah Dillon - 12th Nov
Teenage Joans - 12th Nov

I could not resist the awesome billing of TFS and King Gizz touring together. These guys are so good to watch, the look like they love what they are doing.

My 8th time seeing King Gizz live and again a totally different set. This was their micro tour, mainly playing their microtonal material, which makes sense as their last two studio albums, KG and LW were both microtonal excursions. The highlight of the night was Nuclear Fusion (one of my top tier favourites) and the way they transitioned flawlessly into Honey was impressive. Who would have thought those two songs could connect like that. They really are masters at transitions (Nonagon Infinity). Another highlight was Straws In The Wind. Ambrose usually always gets to sing one song each performance and tonight he was incredible with Straws In The Wind, elongating the song with a call and response with the crowd, up and down the front of the stage. It's a much more impressive song live than the album version.

Emotional arty, but relatable and personable, ethereal folktronica with powerful vocals that remind me a little bit of early Sia and Kate Bush, but not. A very unique artist and performance.

One of my regular local acts I've seen a bunch of times and easily the best local post-punk act. All four musicians bring something special to the table. Despite some old favourites being played the highlight was Frida, the closing track of their latest album. It had me dancing more vigorously than at any other stage of the night, and contains the awesome line (going by memory here so might not be exact) "I tried to drown my sorrows but the bastards learnt to swim".
