One of the more disappointing years in pop music history, 1998 didn't produce a single truly great album, though many were good, and a handful were very good. My actual favorite album of 1998 isn't even on this list — it's a compilation called "Skelleftea" by Swedish power-pop band The Wannadies, a combination of two earlier albums (plus a new song, "Easier to Sing").
I blame the internet, personally. I blame the internet for everything of course, but in this case it might really be responsible, as 1998 marked the beginning of the MP3 filesharing "boom." Musicians, seeing the bleak future of the music business and the looming end of CD sales, began to give up in droves. Meanwhile, the format wars were still in full swing, with Minidiscs, DATs and now DVDs all in play, and all reducing artist revenue. The music press didn't help either, nor did some of the fans, this also being the peak year of online advance-copy album leaks.
I'd like to end this on a positive note by pointing out something good that happened in 1998, but I can't think of anything. Sorry.
