What's interesting about this is that tidal waves can't happen in a zero-gravity environment, even if you could keep the water from instantly freezing. But if you somehow could get around that problem and produce a tidal wave in outer space anyway, it still wouldn't be as cool as this album is.

It's not quite dreampop, not quite lounge music, and not quite "chillwave"... It's hard to say what it is exactly. "Hypnagogic sexy background music" is the best I've come up with so far.

The Haunted Youth are a highly-talented dreampop/shoegazey band from Belgium led by a nice feller named Joachim Liebens, and this is their first album. The band name and this album's title suggest they might be some sort of "horror-pop" outfit, but that's not the impression I get from actually listening to it. It's probably just a "Belgian thing."

This is a full band production and definitely one of Robyn's best albums in recent years, so normally I would rank it higher, but it was such a good year for debut albums I just couldn't. Robyn will understand, though. He's a very reasonable guy, actually.

The Asteroids seem to have reinvented themselves as a shoegaze band and produced their best album in a 25-year career. A total surprise, and in a good way this time. Still no word on why they're numbering the asteroids, though.

I usually don't rate ethereal avant-garde post-rock electroglitch dronegaze soundscape records this highly, but sometimes you just have to make an exception, if only for the sheer number of genre adjectives alone.

This heavy-shoegaze/electrogaze album by a Japanese band with a proggy-sounding name just sort of appeared one day, I gave it a listen on a whim, and I thought, "Wow, this is great! These guys are going to be huge!" Unfortunately, they're still not quite huge yet, though they recently recorded a series of singles in 2024 that are pretty good and seem to bode well for the future. It seems to be a duo consisting of guitarist Makoto Gomi, who was in a band called Zeppet Store, and a new female singer, Shoko Inoue, who really puts their sound over the top, so to speak. (Gomi made three earlier albums on which he did the vocals himself, and his voice is, well, "just okay.") Inoue sort of moves the band into what might be termed "waifgaze" territory because her voice is so breathy and high-pitched, but for many of us that's a good thing. (However, some listeners might find this jarring, and might prefer to not listen to the whole album in one sitting.)
