Softcult started out as a pair of twin sisters from Ontario, Canada who made shoegaze-pop tunes, and it has since grown into a full 4-piece band who make shoegaze-pop records. After four EPs of about 6 songs each, this is their first proper album since it has 11 tracks instead of just 6 (and isn't just a compilation of two of the EPs). They seem to be making an effort here to be less "samey," song-wise, than on the EPs, but they still don't appear to be interested in doing jazz or folk tunes. This stuff is loud, energetic, and would sound pretty aggressive if the vocals weren't so aggressively pretty. So if you like bands like the High Violets, the Fauns, Miniatures, Tallies, and so on — some of whom are also Canadian — you should like this. (Ideally, you should like this even if you don't like or haven''t even heard of those other bands, but I do at least realize you're not here on this Earth just to live up to my personal expectations.)

This is the 13th album by The Asteroid No.4, and their 5th since they decided to modernize their sound and become more of a shoegaze-psychedelic band. This one is just about as good as the last one, "Several Shapes Of Solar Flares," though it's a bit darker in tone and uses more electronics. Still no word on where the other three asteroids are, but they're probably floating around out there somewhere.

Nothing is perhaps the finest shoegaze-metal band in the world right now, and could easily be the best ever, though I haven't heard every shoegaze-metal band that ever existed or anything like that. (How many are there, anyway?) On this album they show signs of moving away from the metal aspect of their sound, at least on some of the tracks, and towards a more diverse and (generally speaking) "up-to-date" approach — in other words, I have no idea where their heads are at now, musically speaking, but there's still plenty of shoegaze-metal involved. Another good album from a a band that doesn't make bad ones. (Sometimes they do bad album cover art though, like in this case.)

I suppose some critics might object to the fact that this, the second album by Belgian power-darkgazer(s) The Haunted Youth, sounds a lot like their first (2022's "Dawn of the Freak"). But when you're doing something right, why wouldn't you keep doing it? There'll be plenty of time 20 or 30 years from now for frontman/singer Joachim Liebens (who appears to be the band's only permanent member at this point) to make a jazz, folk, or ambient neo-classical LP, after people like me have long since gone on to our eternal reward and therefore don't care anymore. With any luck, he (or they, if we include other musicians who might be involved) will make dozens of these things in the meantime. The songs are great (though they do lack complexity, in case you're a stickler for complexity); he has a good voice for this material, and the production sound is fantastic. The only thing I might mention as a possible negative is that there is, on two or maybe three tracks here, some screamo. Not much... and hey, lots of people like screamo! Also, the album cover is, well, so-so. They'll probably want to work on that.

The Julies were active in the early-to-mid-90s "Christian Underground" scene, and released a 6-song EP called "Lovelife" that was well-received by critics — except that they broke up almost immediately after it was released. They billed themselves as "American Britpop," so maybe that's why. Anyway, they got back together in 2020, just in time for the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally managed to release an album called "Always & Always" in 2023. Not bad, but this one is even better! This is their third album if you count "Lovelife" as an album, which I do, because I'm one of "those" people. No word on whether or not the band is still Christian, or still underground, though I've seen photos of them looking very, very dirty, so they probably are.

Paula Kelley is the lead singer (on most tracks) of the Drop Nineteens, the Boston-area shoegaze band. After they broke up in 1995, she made an album in 1997 called "Wonder-Wear" with a new band called Boy Wonder, but they broke up; then she made three quite interesting pop-oriented solo albums, the last one released in 2006. (Some would say "sugary" pop, and they wouldn't be too far off.) But then the Drop Nineteens got back together in 2022, so this fourth solo album was somewhat unexpected. It's not a shoegaze album itself (none of her solo LPs are) — she's not afraid of a few distorted guitars or angelic harmonies here and there, but the songs are still completely pop-oriented, and to be honest, that's a more appropriate style for her voice, which has more of a teen-pop tonality to it and could even be described as "waifish." (That's a nice way of saying she sounds much younger than she actually is.) There's also one disco track, which is unfortunate, but there's a Beach Boys cover, so that helps make up for it. All that aside though, this is probably her best solo album so far, certainly the most well-crafted, and unless you're like me and insist that anything shoegazey is likely to be better than anything non-shoegazey, it's as good (if not better) than any Drop Nineteens album, too.

Look, they sound like the Cocteau Twins, so of course I like them. It's as simple as that, folks.

The fifth album from this mostly-Australian indie rock band, formerly known as "Waikiki" and currently referring to themselves as "Howling Bells with Juanita Stein," and the first from them since 2014's "Heartstrings," this is just a really solid, powerful rock album, reminiscent of Throwing Muses and, well, lots of other bands of that nature. And with a Friday the 13th release date, what could go wrong?

Ed here was (and maybe still is) one of the guitarists for Radiohead, and though he's technically made a previous solo album under the name "EOB," this is the one where he's finally decided to spell his name out, which now leaves Colin Greenwood as the only Radiohead member not to release a solo album under his own name. Hopefully this sort of pointless trivia won't overshadow the fact that Ed has now made the best solo album of any Radiohead member yet, by quite a long ways.

This band tags itself as "heavy alternative" because their sound is somewhere between heavy doom-metal riffage and noisy shoegaze pop, so "alternative" probably just seems a little less specific and limiting. They've also been called "grungegaze" because the tone of their songs tends to be a bit dark, not bright and happy like tweegaze so NONE OF THAT, and there are some quieter passages that might also remind you of Seattle in the 90s, assuming you were there. They also have two lead singers, one male and one female, which works well for them (and may also be why they call themselves "MX LONELY" instead of "Mr. Lonely" or "Ms. Lonely"). All in all, a very solid album, unless you buy the limited-edition "runny-gelatinous" version.
