Recently Departed: 2021
by Moondance

In this chart I remember those songwriters & musicians who passed in 2021 - the talented artists who helped to fill my life with songs, music & lyrical insights into 'life' - and brought me so much pleasure, joy & happiness along the way.
The chart will be ordered by the chronological date of passing during 2021 - except where an artist has had a greater positive impact and thus, rightfully deserve to be elevated towards the top of the chart..
To each & everyone of you - a big Thank You!
Unlike other charts in the 'recently departed' series, I have not been able to fill the 100 places available - and that's not a bad thing - as I always wish for my favourite musical artists to live long & prosper.

Charlie Watts
b: 21 June 1941/d: 24 August 2021 - age 80
Charlie was the drummer for The Rolling Stones from 1963 until his death and involved in every one of the 30 studio albums released during that time. Charlie, along with the other member of the band, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
I have 'Sticky Fingers' in my top 100 greatest albums of all time chart - and I'm grateful to Charlie, Mick J, Mick T, Keith & Bill for the masterpiece that it is.

B: 8 May 1943/d: 10 February 2021 - age 77
Jon released 15 solo albums between 1965 - 2008, including a Grammy Award winning album (Meditation On Winter, 2004). He also collaborated with Johnny Almond to create 'Mark-Almond' - they released 9 studio albums between 1971 - 1996.
From a personal perspective, I am forever grateful to Jon for his collaborative work with John Mayall in 1969 on the 'Empty Rooms' album - released in 1970. Jon played acoustic guitar and co-wrote (with Mayall) three songs - Don't Pick A Flower, Something New & Waiting For The Right Time. I have a very strong affinity with the 'Empty Rooms' album and have it in my top 100 greatest (favourite) albums of all time. I also regard 'Don't Pick A Flower' as one of my favourite songs.
As a side note, Johnny Almond can be heard playing flute on 'Don't Pick A Flower'.

B: 24 September 1942/d: 3 January 2021 - age 78
Gerry is best known as founder, songwriter, guitarist and lead vocals for Gerry And The Pacemakers.
The band had a significant impact, along with The Beatles, in popularising the Merseyside beat of the early 1960's - and released 7 studio albums between 1963 - 1967.
Major top 10 singles hits were covers of 'How Do You Do It?', 'I Like It', 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as well as songs written by Gerry 'I'm The One', 'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying' & 'Ferry Cross The Mersey'.
On a personal note: I clearly remember (as a 7 year old) hearing the first wave of Gerry & The Pacemaker hits ('How Do You Do It' & 'I Like It') coming across the radio and feeling joyfully happy as I sang them on my way to primary school. The second wave of songs (written by Gerry) came out as I turned 8 years old - 'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying' & 'Ferry Cross The Mersey' - and these were more atmospheric & lyrically thoughtful - and I also found myself attaching to this new style in my quieter moments.

B: 7 August 1942/d: 29 May 2021 - age 78
B.J. was best known for a number of hits singles in the late 60's & early 70's.
'Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head' reached no. 1 in several countries including US &Canada; and the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2014.
Other personal favourites of mine were: Hooked On A Feeling, Everybody's Talking, Everybody's Out Of Town.
I must say that BJ's song of that period bring back to me strong positive emotions.

Hilton will always be remembered for his iconic guitar introduction the 'The Animals' equally iconic cover of 'The House Of The Rising Sun'.
Hilton was an original member of The Animals, playing guitar & singing backing vocal, on all three studio albums released between 1964-66 plus two latter 'band reunion' albums released in 1977 & 1983.
After The Animals disbanded Hilton embarked on a largely unsuccessful solo career.
In 1994, Hilton (along with other band members of The Animals) was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

B: 12 July 1935/d: 16 April 2021 - age 85
Barry was primarily a songwriter and co-wrote 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Grows' which (for whatever reason) has been a lifetime favourite with me since I first heard Edison Lighthouse's version in 1970, when I was 13 going on 14. Other chart topping songs written by Barry include 'The Last Waltz', 'Delilah' & 'Here It Comes Again'.

Ron Bushy
b: 23 December 1941/d: 29 August 2021 - age 79
Ron was drummer for Iron Butterfly and best remembered for the drum solo on the band's iconic song 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. Ron was the only member of the band to play on all six studio albums - released between 1968 - 1975.
On a personal note - 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' was a vital record to my own musical discovery & upbringing - and it would play (much to my parent's annoyance) often in our house in the early 70's - and Ron Bushy's drum solo was a highlight. Although the album isn't in my top 100 of all time, it holds a special nostalgic place in my heart.
