Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some tracks can have several thousand ratings)

This track is rated in the top 2% of all tracks on BestEverAlbums.com. This track has a Bayesian average rating of 84.7/100, a mean average of 88.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.3/100. The standard deviation for this track is 8.0.

June 2018. An incredibly humid day in South Wales, and I decide a drive up into the Welsh Valleys is in order. The roads up there are stunning. I whack on my Driving Playlist, which includes Hawkwind's masterpiece Assault And Battery/The Golden Void.

There are many great roads in this part of the world, but the A4061, otherwise known as the Rhigos Road, is particularly special. Starting in the north, it gradually climbs up past an old coal field, before throwing you two massive sweeping switchbacks to negotiate. Navigate those and you're rewarded with a stunning view of the wide valley you've just climbed out of, the horizon filled by the Brecon Beacons.

It seems that this epic song came on at just the right point, as I got to enjoy its first half on the first part of the Rhigos road. However, continue onward, and you work your way over a wide ridge, before diving down into the Tynewydd Valley, the road snaking itself along the side of this massive, stunning valley. Just as the road curved round to reveal this beauty, Part One finished and The Golden Void opened in its mystical, atmospheric fashion.

That moment could not have been better timed, and matched perfectly what I was seeing. The view was simply unbelievable; the 3pm summer sun bathing everything in a golden orange glow, the massive humidity of the day creating a pale, thick haze that obscured the other side of the valley to create an almost Tolkein feel to the moment, and me and my car, blasting down the side on this stunning road, carried downwards by a Hawkwind soundtrack. My only hope is that those who read this comment may one day experience such musical euphoria.
