The first two tracks on this album are some of the most impressive prog/'space' rock I've ever heard. (Edited)
Housed in what is possibly their best sleeve art, to rival Genesis, Yes, Floyd and Crimson, the music ain't half bad either. In fact it is quite a complex album. 'Magnu' mixes swirling synths with Eastern sounding instruments to great effect, with an almost ambient rhythm pounding away in the background. 'Dying Seas' is a synth lovers dream mixing synth textures and strings with wispy flute passages, gradually breaking down into processed spoken word sounding like a crazed Davros from Doctor Who. 'Standing at the Edge of Time' is a personal favourite.
This was Lemmy's swansong to Hawkwind, and what a way to go! Hawkind had added an extra drummer on this, and this one continued in the musical progression that "Hall of the Mountain Grill" started. Brilliant! (Edited)
A great record by a great band. More sophisticated than their earlier work they have grown as musicians and songwriters by this album.
