This isn’t just a showcase of how great Tony Williams was in Miles’ band. It’s a display of the respect and trust Miles had for Tony given the fact portions of this track sound like the lead instrument is drums without the form suggesting there’s “soloing” going on.
Williams is allowed to paint with massively artistic brush strokes and elevate this already wonderful piece to something much more indicative of the turning tides Davis’ band were navigating through jazz at the time.
