I think we're getting a little off topic... remember the topic was literature, not the church of the flying Spaghetti monster ( I thought it was a bit of an obnoxious smug type of thing to do).
It's interesting that virtually all Sci-Fi (not the grand literature you mentioned) portrays various forms of church as pure evil. Same with historical fiction. You could hardly find a priest who isn't some sort of cold, steely, hypocritical villain.
I don't object, per se, to people pointing out the flaws of religion, but its been beaten to death by just about everyone. Couldn't we just have one alternate universe where the church is more like our church, giving money to the poor and help to the masses?
Religions often come across as evil and manipulative, while this is not the case-generally-on earth. Modern literature savages religion using the same old boring arguments.
My two cents worth.
