Thanks, give me a bit to read through these. A preliminary response though. If you do some extra searching on that first link, you can also find this:

http://pielkeclimatesci.wordpress.com/2...te-change/

in which Pielke states: “Humans are significantly altering the global climate, but in a variety of diverse ways beyond the radiative effect of carbon dioxide. The IPCC assessments have been too conservative in recognizing the importance of these human climate forcings as they alter regional and global climate.”

Even though he's not a fan of the IPCC, he has the same conclusion i.e., that there is a significant anthropogenic forcing in recent climate change. You might have forgotten that the main argument here was against anthropogenic forcing in climate change (or that climate change exists), and not trying to tarnish the IPCC; thanks for providing ammo against yourself, I guess?

I'll read through these by tomorrow evening.

Re: Some scientists arguing that the cause of global warming is unknown

What Syun-Ichi Akasofu says in pielkeclimatesci: "the method of study adopted by the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) is fundamentally flawed, resulting in a baseless conclusion: Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations. Contrary to this statement ..., there is so far no definitive evidence that 'most' of the present warming is due to the greenhouse effect. ... If the IPCC had paid careful attention to the view of genuine climatologists about climate change during the last several hundred years, they should have recognized that the range of observed natural changes should not be ignored, and thus their conclusion should be very tentative. The term 'most' in their conclusion is baseless."

It was the overwhelming consensus of the vast majority of science supporting evidence that the world was flat!

Your example serves my argument better than your own:

Hundreds of years ago, the prevailing scientific wisdom was that the world was flat. When individuals theorized, and eventually proved that the world was round, the deniers labeled, criticized, and argued against the new science, because it disagreed with what they were comfortable with.

Earlier this century, the prevailing scientific wisdom was that man couldn't impact something as massive as the earth's atmosphere. Now that science has theorized, and proven that man-made climate change is occurring, the deniers label, criticize and argue against the new science, because it disagrees with what they are comfortable with.

The thought of climate change is unsettling. It means serious consequences to our economy, agriculture, weather events, and ecological health. Bringing about change means we have to break away from our consumptive and fossil fuel lifestyle. Many people fear these changes, worry about sacrifice or inconvenience, or simply don't like negative news. It's easier to deny than face unpleasant truth.

There are also others who decide their views on an argument based on their ideological subscription. Rolling Eyes

The battle against the discovery that the world was flat was waged primarily by the church as it didn't fit with what they were teaching. They have a tendency to do that. It may also be noted that the discovery of a round earth predates that of the scientific method.

As for global warming, the scientific community is pretty much united on the matter, with some squabble over the details that the current triple-R community in the US take as a "we don't know". That is not what the squabble is about. The handful of real scientists that are on the screw-global-warming side of the debate are so easy to count that even those who seriously believe there is no need for addressing the issue should be able to get all the way to the end should they start counting. There are also a bunch of people who claim to be scientists that take this stance. For the most part they are not worth paying much attention to.

Yet again the screwed up political stance of the nut-wings keep the world from having a meaningful and balanced debate about an important issue.
