Yes, well we were discussing VU&N. I'm not familiar with Faust so I cannot comment on how psychedelic it is but, as you said I said "if it evokes a psychedelic feeling... regard it as psychedelic".

Anyway, wasn't Faust released in '71? I thought you wanted to stick to the '60s?

Faust was a general example of how experimentation with sound leads to psychedelia.

Well, given that we both seem to have accepted that defining something as psychedelic can be completely subjective, offering examples of it seems a little redundant. Having said that, I'm listening to Faust right now and it does sound very interesting so thanks for bringing it to my attention it.

well here's a topic that you can really get your teeth into.

When talking about 60's psych, you can't leave out the West Coast bands of that era.

The obvious artists are;

Country Joe & The Fish
The Charlatans
Jefferson Airplane
It's a Beautiful Day
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Grateful Dead
Santana
Steve Miller Band but to name a few but.....

There were others like;

Kak
Fifty Foot Hose
Seatrain
THe Immediate Family

who produced great but short lived music

Check 'em out

Experimetation only leads to psychedelia if you're experimenting with acid, although I understand the same state can be achieved through meditation.

But seriously, I understand that psychedelia comes in many different forms but I was looking at it from the perspective of the artists intentions, whether that be a record inspired by a psychedelic experience, music designed to recreate or enhance the psychedelic experience or simply recording stuff while tripping out of thier minds. Without the psychedelic element it's just experimentation.

Frank Zappa's early stuff was pretty psychedelic and he wasn't so much inspired by acid as he was by making fun of people on acid.. I guess that means the influence still comes from acid but its less drug influenced as much as it's influenced by society.

I'm not sure how psychedelic I consider this Faust album to be but it would certainly make a fine accompaniment to an evening spent desperately clutching a table leg in the mistaken belief that was the only way I could prevent myself from turning into a fish.

A bunch of the music mentioned in this thread is not psychedelic. Is anyone else feeling this.
