Had Selling England By The Pound on a few times today. It's good, in places exceptional; especially the opener and closer.
I don't know if you have already seen their live performances from that era. Those are very special. Even if Genesis continued to make good prog rock and pop albums after Gabriel left, their performances weren't half as enternatining or interesting as in the early 70s.
Here is a one hour concert from 1973 in very good quality. Two songs, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight and I Know What I Like are from Selling England by the Pound.
Their most accessible album under Gabriel to start with?
I agree with the others. Selling England By The Pound is a good place to start. Nursery Crime, Foxtrot and Lamb are all in my top Genesis albums.
Genesis Live is good as well. Then move on to Trick then Wind (Post Gabriel). I like Duke, Abacab, and I Can't Dance from the Collins era. And Then There Were Three and Calling All Stations are their two weakest albums, imo.
