let's talk bootlegs

so my favorite Dead bootleg is probably 1977-05-08 - Barton Hall, Cornell University, with Old Renaissance Faire Grounds likely pulling in second. Sadly bootlegs can't make charts, though this was released in 2013

and it's essentially an official release of the Faire Grounds recording, easily making it my favorite official live dead release (even topping Dick's Picks 4). Now I just need to light some prayer candles and wish for an official master of the Barton Hall show, though there's really a question of whether you'd prefer the intensity of the audience recording or the crispness of the soundboard. Both are wonderful in their own right and I'd love to see special release that includes both or sth

as for studio albums idk about you but right now Aoxomoxoa is my jam

Dick's Picks, Vol. 4: Fillmore East, Ne...teful Dead

Those 90 minutes that are Dark Star into That's It For The Other One into Turn On Your Lovelight are just absolute prime Dead, it's heaven man. Probably one of, if not the best, performance of Dark Star I've heard, up there with the one on Live Dead and Dick's Picks Vol. 2

Live/Dead by Grateful Dead

This album was my life my summer before starting college. I still often make fun of the Dead in public, and I really do NOT like their American Beauty album, but their jammy stuff is great.

Truly great Dark Star jams are a thing of beauty. It's worth noting that this exists:

Grayfolded. Basically it's a bunch of Dark Stars edited together until it's some kind of psychedelic plunderphonic bit that goes over 2 hours. Certainly interesting though I'm not sure how much I actually enjoy listening to it compared to any of the individual jams from which it is composed.

Dang, I remember blindly listening to that album back in high school and really enjoying it. I think it was the first Dead album I ever heard, though I never realized it was plunderphonics.

Anyway, it seems like BEA's highest-ranked bootleg is Barton Hall. Do you guys think I should hear that first, or Gabe's Veneta Oregon one instead?

Hey, Live/Dead is fantastic, I was just listening to it on vinyl last night. That version of Turn On Your Lovelight is so much fun.

One of the more underrated live Dead albums is this one:

Dozin' At The Knick by Grateful Dead

Mostly because everyone looks to 70s Dead for the best stuff (and it usually is), but this concert from March of 1990 in New York is really excellent. Their cover of When I Paint My Masterpiece (a song you don't hear nearly as often as other covers they do) is absolutely sublime
