I think Bowie himself is overrated, though not sure that'll go over well on this website. T.Rex was doing way better glam rock with "Electric Warrior", released a year before this one.

I like T.Rex too, but I think Ziggy is the better glam album, not all the tracks on Electric Warrior are killers imo. Also, Bowie gets all the praise he does because he was not only instrumental in making glam rock a major subgenre (Mott the Hoople, Lou Reed), but he helped in the development of punk rock (he produced Iggy's Raw Power), maintained soul as a significant source of inspiration in his music and the one he inspired, helped solidify rock as an artistic and eccentric genre (Hunky Dory & Aladdin Sane), synthesized blue-eyed soul (Young Americans) with the krautrock of Can & Neu! to a new style (Station to Station) that would eventually develop into/alongside post-punk, new wave, synth-pop, and sophisti-pop. His Berlin trilogy (Low, Heroes, Lodger) was critical in popularizing electronic music. And although less noticeable, he brought blues guitar to dance music in Let's Dance.

He's the most important artist from the 70's. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that.

I am not really a fan of Bowie, but this album ROCKS! Definitely a favourite from the 70s.
