While the Smiths albums that came after this one were deceptive in the fact that they had bouncy and jangly accompaniment to contrast with the brooding lyrics, this debut is just melancholic through and through. But not the comforting kind of sadness, it just makes you hate your insecurities even more. One of the most uncompromisingly honest albums I have ever heard - from Morrissey's desolate and soul-crushing confessions and haunting falsetto to the post-punk inspired melodies that are projected from a pop perspective.
One of the albums that I'd take with me to the grave. _________________

Interesting point. This is clearly the most "post-punk" album of theirs, for instance I've always thought of Still Ill as a song that would fit early The Cure repertoire. Especially the basslines here are inspired by what happened in Britain over the previous couple of years. Also, I think Pretty Girls Make Graves is a bit Two Tone-tinged.
Anyway, this is a fantastic debut, both musically and lyrically. While The Queen Is Dead may be more refined, this one has a sort of raw quality about it.
My favourites include Pretty Girls Make Graves, Reel Around The Fountain and Still Ill. _________________ Always shouts out something obscene

Still Ill , Hand In Glove , and What Difference Does It Make? might be the best 3 song streak on an album ever. _________________

Wonderful album. Not quite as good as The Queen Is Dead, but not much is.

In terms of the material it's as strong as any Smith's album. Unfortunately let down by some tinny production, later addressed successfully in A Hatful of Hollow.

I think all the tracks from this album that appeared on 'Hatful of Hollow' were taken from live BBC sessions recorded for John Peel and David Jenson, the production team are rightfully lauded for the many sessions recorded for the late and sadly missed John Peel.
Fantastic record from start to finish which is in my top 10.

Literally perfect. People like to praise the lyrics on The Queen Is Dead, but I think the lyrics on this album are even better. Some of my favorites:
"I've seen you smile, but I've never really heard you laugh. So who is rich and who is poor? I cannot say."
"Give in to lust, give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll soon be dust."
"I could have been wild and I could have been free, but nature played this trick on me."
Literally all of "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle".
"I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving."
"Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? I dunno."
"For there are brighter sides to life, and I should know because I've seen them, but not very often."
"The devil will find works for idle hands to do. I stole and I lied, and why? Because you asked me to. But now you make me feel so ashamed because I've only got two hands."
Basically I love this album quite a lot.

My favorite Smiths album. The US version is perfect with This Charming Man. The UK version doesn't have it.
