Big yes

I've been wanting to say that on BEA for years but I've only ever said it to peers irl. Not to say Say It Ain't So is a bad song (it's ok). The rest of the album is so much better.

It's better than - at least - 'Buddy Holly', 'Surf Wax America', and 'Holiday'. The rest? I'll give you the rest.

Nah, No One Else is the worst by a wide margin. Garbage lyrics.

Replace Buddy Holly with No One Else and I could do with that.

"Holiday" is the one song that's close to it. Hard disagree on the other two.

I don't disagree with the lyrics being awful - it's kind of a proto-Pinkerton in that way, and Pinkerton is an album that's really grown off me over the years - but I'll take its upbeat power pop over the faux grunge of "Say It Ain't So" any day. The grunge influence is really my main problem with it, the rest of the album is such a shift away from the popular rock of the early 90's and "Say It Ain't So" feels like a pale imitation of it instead. And at least the narrator of "No One Else" gets broken up with in "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here," not that that excuses the lyrics.

I think the lyrics of No One Else are just fine. They're what Skinny called straightforward and plainspoken. What's the problem with that? Meanwhile the catchy music-writing of No One Else totally eclipses Say It Ain't So, and it perfectly pairs with The World Has Turned and Left Me Here. As babyBlueSedan says, Say It Ain't So feels like grunge-pandering single that doesn't quite fit Weezer's style and strengths, and was shoehorned onto to the album where it doesn't really gel with the rest of the tracks. Yeah, Say It Ain't So is the worst song on the Blue Album. If anything comes close, I might say Undone (which is still enjoyable at times).

I love Surf Wax America and Holiday. I wish they put Susanne on the album, but I can't think where it would logically go.

Sure, they're straightforward and plainspoken about the narrator's ideal relationship, which is a profoundly abusive one.

Also I do think Say It Ain't So is the best track, which is apparently an unpopular opinion in this thread despite being quite a popular one on BEA.

I would argue extremely possessive, not abusive, but that may be a matter of semantics. In any case, it's whether you choose to believe the narrator. Does the narrator of No One Else truly believe what he's singing? Or is it an exaggeration of his thoughts? We exaggerate things in real life when we're upset about something, and say things to people we love that we don't actually mean.
