I also think this is definitely their best album and one of my favourite late night listens. I just love the nostalgia and melancholy in Berningers voice which truly shines on this album.

Also, I would say this is definitely one of the most consistent albums ever. Bloodbuzz Ohio and Conversation 16 are clear favourites, but every other track is roughly on the same (and also very good) level. This makes it such a compelling listen.

I hear you but I feel like the scene barely resembles the original. Even garage rock revival feels closer to the original thing

Maybe that's just a generational thing, including the connection to indie rock.

the nationals best songs are scattered throughout their albums.

But in high violet, there is a new mold. the songs are more striking, more explosive.
its more muscular (big and ambitious)
the album did what it was intended :the band got bigger--bigger than anyone
thought they would've just a couple of years beforehand.

bloodbuzz ohio, england, runaway, lemon world, vanderlyle crybaby geeks, etcc..
the album is absolutely brillant.
