Prefer SY going with Minutemen though, think they are more in keeping with the theme.

It's amazing. For a band who barely gets any love on BEA outside of Double Nickels, Minutemen have done extremely well in this tourney. Not saying that they're not great. But if so many people love them, why does What Makes A Man Start Fires? rank 92nd in 1983?
Sonic Youth is a clear choice for me. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Can you give me any guidance on how to get into them? I'm struggling a lot.

I think it takes time. They use a lot of abrasive noise and tones that come across as ugly initially. There have been a lot of studies in sound regarding your brain adjusting to new sounds. It's apparent that anything completely new will be immediately off-putting.
Back when Igor Stravinsky introduced his legendary Rite Of Spring, the audience hated it so much they rioted. With due time it became regarded as one of the most important works in the history of music. That initial reaction was because the music was so completely revolutionary.
Sonic Youth hasn't been quite as revolutionary as Stravinsky, but the effect is similar.
I think the first Sonic Youth album I loved was Dirty. It was considered their most commercial release at the time, and it's not nearly as noisy and dissonant as Daydream Nation, Sister, Evol. I would suggest starting there.
I think the key is knowing that tastes develop gradually, what I loved in music when I was 15 is very different than what I love now. and that's okay. no need to rush yourself. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I hated Daydream Nation the first times. Then I tried Goo, as if seemed more accessible. I did not actively hate it like DN, but I just thought it was pretty uninteresting. Much time later, I tried Sister, and that's when it worked. The more I listened to it, the greater it was. From here it just became easy. I re-listened to DN and it was an instant favorite. Like, that listen was on of the greatest things that ever happened to me musically. Incredible. I now really like Goo too, even if it's vastly inferior to their earlier work. EVOL took me a bit more time as it's less poppy, but I now love it. I have yet to "get" Bad Moon Rising, though.
Anyway, voting for SY. They've become one of my favorite bands if all time.
