I wouldn't take Judas Priest over Metallica in any contest. They've been together for as long as ZZ Top, and their output has always been inconsistent and littered with bad filler. They do have longevity or a small handfull of successful singles, but not a lot outside of that. Yes, Rob Halford is a fine singer...he's no Plant, but he has some good qualities. Is he better than Hetfield? Depends on if you rate the quality of your vocalist by the highest note he can reach.
Metallica has recorded several albums that I either own or would own...I have all of the Priest I would ever own...two albums. British Steel is a good record, but in no way great...anything that contains a turkey like "United" is way overrated...unless you like your country music stars singing about how great it is to be an American. "Screaming For Vengeance" has great tracks...and awful tracks. The problem with Priest is that they could never put together a really good record from start to finish...they just have never had the songwriting. They can sound terrific, but the reality is, they have never been much more to me than what KISS would have sounded like with more talent.
Metallica? They took what they heard from Priest and tripled it. Quadrupled it. They made the metal of Judas Priest sound old and out of touch. They had more great songs in one decade than Priest had in their entire career. They have albums that are worth hearing...Judas Priest has things like Sin After Sin and Rocka Rolla and Painkiller and Sad Wings of Destiny and Jugulator. Take all of the good to slightly above average tracks on those 5 records and you might have enough for a full disc. Priest has been around forever...that doesn't make them a great band. Good, but not Metallica by any means.
First I want to say don't get me wrong I'm a huge Metallica fan.I've bought 6 of their albums and have seen them live.I have no album on my chart placed higher on my chart that was made in the last 25 years than Master Of Puppets.But Rob Halford of Juds Priest is a vastly superior vocalist compaired to James Hetfield of Metallica.Halford has a voice unsurpassed in power and range.Judas Priest were major contributors in the advancement of the metal genre of music.But what I'm interested in here is simply the quality of the albums these 2 bands have made and to judge by that only in making my decision.So,my proposition is simply that the overall collective studio album discography of Judas Priest is of a higher caliber than that of Metallica.So I will simply put the 9 studio albums of Metallica against 9 from Judas Priest and rate from 0-10.
