You should try College Dropout Pam. It's a much more humble Kanye (being younger), and draws a lot more from spirituality and positive energy than his later albums do. Though the Wire is a great song about the effects of a near-fatal car crash he was in. If you like that, you'll probably enjoy the rest of the album.

Yeah, I think it is just me, but I don't really see what is so great about it. Maybe I am just not gangster enough?
Kanye West is one of the least 'gangster' sort of rappers i can think of, so that can't be it.
his appeal is more in his production than his rapping. I mean he's still a great wordsmith, his actual delivery is okay but it's his beats that makes him the greatest solo artist working today.
