Paul. McCartney.

Great artist. Not anywhere near an album as great as his talent.

You know what, I'm also very disappointed in his post-Beatles stuff.

Have you heard Emitt Rhodes' self-titled album? It's basically the album McCartney should have done.

I don't think Tom Petty has that "great" album to his credit that he should have based on the number of great songs he has produced.

Why are there so many threads like this lately?

Two main reasons I expect

1) Once you start making too many charts you realize that it is impossible to have charts for all decades which will be made up of only "best ever" albums. There are only so many "best ever" albums but there is nearly an infinity of "I like" to "great". Particularly when you get into the 60s or earlier when basically the album was not an artistic medium in and of itself but only a format.

&

2) Once you start to look at your 500 listed albums and cannot find influential artists such as BB King (or some of the others listed so far in this thread), you realise that the best of music cannot be translated in best ever album lists no matter how long or how numerous they are.

I can't wait to be able to make thematic lists ... It will then be possible to say more with shorter lists in my opinion.

Sorry - I started this thread off on a tangent... I meant #2 - artist that lack complete albums. I shouldn't have mentioned artists that have albums, but you don't think they're great. I meant Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, etc... where you're relying on singles and compilations more often than not. If we ranked artists without considering albums, these guys would surge up the polls.

James Brown - great call... Live at the Apollo is great, but it's more like a 'live compilation'.

Oh and I'd second Johnny Cash for sure, his discography is a mess of singles and compilations with barely a proper album to be seen from the early days.

Probably why his top ranked album (At Folsom Prison, a live album) is only at 201 and he has a band ranking of 120.

Great artists without great albums really do suffer on this site, I mean Johnny Cash the 120th best? That ain't right.

To add to this...

Johnny Cash - #120 artist
Elvis - #168

Sam Cooke
Otis Redding
Supremes
Little Richard
Buddy Holly

-none are in the top 200 (did a cursory check - sorry if I missed one)

Great artists who were singles and compilations based. Therefore lacking on the BEA list. I know it's a album site - I'm OK with this. I'm just curious to see who gets overlooked because of it.

I would personally put the Chili Peppers in this category. They have probably 15 songs I really love, but no album that I love. Even with BSSM I can't really listen start to finish.

And Aerosmith definitely.

They were the first band that popped into my head.

I disagree slightly, because Bowie did have Low, Station to Station and "Heroes". Ziggy ain't no bad album, either.

I have come to mind a great Tina Turner, the album is perhaps best known for "Private Dancer" (1984). However, she has been since the 1960s put a lot of hard hits:here is the 80´s examples..."Let's Stay Together"
"Help!","What's Love Got to Do with It","Better Be Good to Me","Private Dancer","I Can't Stand the Rain","Show Some Respect","We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" ,"One of the Living","Typical Male", Break Every Rule,"Back Where You Started","Two People", "Break Every Rule" ,"Paradise Is Here","Afterglow", "Addicted to Love (Live)","634-5789 (Live)" (with Robert Cray),"Nutbush City Limits (Live)"
"A Change Is Gonna Come (Live)","The Best"...etc
