When people talk about their favourite rappers, emphasis is largely put on lyrics, and sometimes stretches to flow, especially on this side of the Atlantic. Even though it’s the first thing you notice about a rapper, you rarely ever hear a great voice mentioned as a reason behind a rapper’s greatness. But virtually all of my favourite rappers have a distinctive vocal technique, from Ghostface Killah’s exasperated croak, to Pharoahe Monch’s booming bass drum-esque announcements, to Guru’s soft, schoolteacherly tone.

This is me. Also this is why I don't like Mos Def whose voice timbre might not be exactly unbearable to me but his intonation makes all sentences sound the same to me. This factor is also the major contributor to my obsession with Jay E.

Sometimes I really hate loving Eyedea, seeing as he seems to be the rapper of choice for fucking annoying middle-class white guys who comment on Eminem rap battles on youtube...

Me a bit. Bobby Shmurda's big hit is actually one of my favorite rap songs of the year. I also love Waka Flocka Flame, Childish Gambino, and some A$AP (Rocky, Ferg, some other guy) stuff (if any of them are considered mainstream). There's some stuff I hear that I enjoy, but a lot of it does fall into the boring money and hoes shit that most unfamiliar people think that all hip hop is. But I can dig a tune like that sometimes.

I can enjoy a lot of Watching Movies... and what I've heard from Faces sounded pretty nice too. Rick Ross, on the other hand, I could never get into.

I like the Weekend (partucularly Echoes of Silence but his other two tapes are good too, haven't heard Kiss Land). I haven't heard PartyNextDoor but I do love Frank Ocean (Channel Orange is on my chart and I'm really looking forward to what he does next), How to Dress Well (Love Remains is also on my chart I'm pretty sure) and FKA twigs if you consider her to be R&B. I'm sure there are more whom I'm forgetting.

I've been really into Kevin Gates lately. Neil is right, one of the best out there.
