Very solid list, though I'll ask you to reconsider your classification of Silence of the Lambs; I gave a hundred reasons its a thriller in this thread. Strangely enough I'm not a big fan of any of your 21st century picks but the quality of the classics here is undeniable, even cult classics like Basket Case and Maniac Cop. With that said, I plan on hosting the horror list next October and if you happen to miss it, just go ahead and give me permission to use this list and I'll come back and get it (I'll also need you to clarify years for certain titles - although the main one in question would be The Fly as the remake tends to be quite popular but the original is a classic as well, half these films have well known remakes/originals). But you have plenty of time to upgrade it to 100 if you like. I would imagine you could come up with a strong list just based on this but if not there's 10 months to try to see some more. Check out my Letterboxd ratings and lists if you need some help.

Maybe I'm late to the party but just saw Egger's The Witch (2015), which I rated 7/10. Following the story of a New England family that has been banished by its Church from its town to live and farm on its own, I thought this was an expertly paced, creepy supernatural horror film with methodical and elliptical editing and stunning visuals that are a cross between Tarkovsky's Nostalghia and Caravaggio's paintings, but with the content of Goya's black period. Cinematically, it is fairly reminiscent of Von Trier's Antichrist, and in various ways, Dreyer's Ordet and the religious conviction of his works, Freidkin's The Exorcist, Bergman's Hour of the Wolf, and other folklore/films of supernatural horror.

Highly recommended to horror fans. It has an uncommon artistry, genuine atmosphere and measured technical command to it that is rather rare for the genre.

Very nice. Big slasher fan I see. I've italicized a few more titles that you haven't provided years for, but in pretty much every case I have a pretty good idea of which one you meant so don't worry about fixing it unless it's a surprise pick (the remake/reboot in most cases). Curious as to your thoughts on Italian horror in general, as you've got a couple great ones here but considerably less than the average horror buff.

Yeah, I'd def be up for a revamp of this come next October. Figure we might be able to whip up something a little more solid (I remember getting several odds lists on this one Neutral )

Surely there's a handful of films that've come out since that would make the cut as well. That new Kevin Spacey short? Horrifying.

I remember a lot of people being open about the issue of not having seen many horror films. Hopefully those who are still around have had a chance to see more; I know I have, but I went from October '16 to October '17 watching almost exclusively horror for a year straight. My list I provided was really solid but would be so different today. I put up a new top 50 on Letterboxd a few days back to coincide with a horror podcast I listen to and am in the Facebook group for. The 3 hosts each did their own top 50, and it was interesting to see the diversity of choices (130 different films, and of the 20 that were on multiple lists, none were on all three). I mean its pretty clear who the real expert who's seen everything (though he's very partial to the 70s and 80s) is while the other two aren't really any more knowledgeable than me overall but are quickly learning due to their dedication to the podcast. Anyhow I did my method where I calculated points based on their lists and (like I said, only 20 movies made 2 of their lists) Return of the Living Dead happened to be #1. Can't remember the full order off the top of my head but I think 2 and 3 were A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and Day of the Dead. So very 80s heavy, but the point is horror is a genre you can really throw ratings and critical perspective out the window to the extent. I mean, Psycho and Nosferatu (our number 1 and 2 here) are gonna still make my list, but aside from all my 10/10s (roughly 30 movies) there's gonna be some movies that I give a highly generous 7 to and might make my list over 9s because of how fun they are. I can't do that with most other genres, where I can literally say I "love" a 7/10. A 7/10 drama is usually well acted but uninteresting, a 7/10 comedy is fun but uninspiring, a 7/10 thriller doesn't hit the right notes to justify a second viewing. But a 7/10 horror film, like Street Trash or Class of Nuke Em High or Friday the 13th Part 4 have so much heart that they're required viewing. Meanwhile, some 9/10s like Angst or The Untold Story are just so intense and gut-wrenching that I couldn't recommend them to anyone who isn't looking for something that gritty and realistic, as I can rarely watch them myself.

But yeah, my main issue with the final product on this old list is still the 21st century sequels. I mean there's multiple Saw and Final Destination films, Scream 3, Ring 2... But no Friday 2 or 4, Nightmare 3, Halloween 2 or 3, Phantasm 2, etc. Not saying that we need a dozen sequels on the list because quite frankly we don't, but if we're going to we should at least have some of the good ones.

Yes i am a huge slasher fan, i haven't seen a ton of italian horror. i tend to mostly watch american or canadian made films much like in music i admit to being american centric. don't worry i don't own a maga hat and never will. Made some modifications to my list as well.

I've got a nice playlist going for horror films on YouTube. It's far from the biggest horror playlist you'll find on the site but I've tried to keep it to the essentials. Romero's original zombie trilogy, lots of Italian stuff, a few 80s slashers, a good bit of Troma, the three most famous silent horror films ever, and a few other classics and guilty pleasures. I try to update it every now and then but also stuff gets taken down occasionally, so if you find some free time and have a decent way to watch YouTube give it a look.

No. Should I? Regarding the Facebook group I'm a part of two horror groups but one is very nostalgia heavy (posting and hearting classic movie posters and pictures of Boris Karloff) while the other is a podcast where everybody who has a podcast saves their opinion for it and everyone who doesn't is kinda just sheep who like or dislike movies but don't give much explanation as to why and never seem to want to actually discuss movies. So I'm open to joining another if it's beneficial to my brain. As for YouTube I have a love and hate relationship with movie channels and don't spend much time on it but I've never heard of those guys. Moodz616 is a very knowledgeable enthusiast and has a massive collection, probably the best horror collection I've ever seen. I've got to know him and his crew so well we fight like children sometimes in the aforementioned facebook group run by him.
