AfterHours wrote: | The Velvet Underground & Nico --> White Light/White Heat --> The Velvet Underground
Even though the first two are vastly superior to their third, this run may never be beaten -- despite many amazing 3-album efforts by other rock and jazz artists. I am of course not including classical works as "albums", otherwise the likes of Beethoven (especially his late period), and several other classical artists, would supplant even The Velvet Underground's efforts.
NOTE: Carla Bley might have a better run if one considers A Genuine Tong Funeral --> Jazz Composer's Orchestra (aka Communications) --> Escalator Over the Hill, validly "hers" (those are each collaborations with other major artists) |
UPDATE: Somehow I forgot Tim Buckley when I originally posted. So actually Buckley probably topped The Velvet Underground's run with Blue Afternoon (1969) --> Lorca (1970) --> Starsailor (1970) ... I'd rank Lorca slightly below Velvet Underground and Nico, and Starsailor slightly below White Light/White Heat, but Blue Afternoon a good margin above Velvet Underground's self-tltled third album, so overall I'd probably give him the edge.

As far as hip hop goes, Eminem had a good three-album stretch of:
The Slim Shady LP

Beatles Pink Floyd David Bowie Radiohead Smiths Cure Kate Bush R.E.M. Jimi Hendrix Experience
Yeah yeah yeah agreed.
But the ultimate for me is:
They Might Be Giants:
They Might Be Giants; Lincoln; Flood.
They also did the compilation album Don't Let's Start in between and that is ace too.
Oh and also Grateful Dead:
Live/Dead; Workingman's Dead; American Beauty.

Forgot Bob Dylan. (How could I?)
The holy grail of:
Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde on Blonde
Someone may already have put this but I love these 3 albums. Heck they even released a Bootleg series CD recently based on them.
And how could I forget Nirvana:
Bleach; Nevermind; In Utero
