This was an idea I was hoping to introduce, but I feel like now is the perfect time to have it kickstarted if there's enough support and interest.

While we have a number of daily topics for us to discuss which provide a great platform for us to display our opinions regarding certain albums, a chance for deeper, more focused discussions can sometimes be interrupted or lost in the midst.

What Point of Discussion would be is a topic which I would post every Monday and Thursday that would feature a question, statement, quote, evidence, review, news and so on that invites a number of different views and hopefully will encourage users to get involved and interested.

I didn't want this to be daily in order to concentrate the quality of each thread, and hopefully it won't overload the music forum with additional 'of the day' like threads, to allow non-calender threads to be created and noticed.

The way it would work is you would PM a possible point of discussion, and I will feature it as the next PoD or, if this becomes popular, I will cherry-pick which ones invite the most response - while making sure every user gets a fair chance.

Additional ideas would be to structure how responses are made. Ie. the person who nominated the PoD would have the first say as to why they chose it, and what they think. Or once a user has given their opinion, they can chose who should respond next? Maybe this is asking too much or is too restrictive, but it's worth considering.

I'd like to hear what you guys think, and I'm open for nominations whenever. If this is popular enough, I will aim to start it next Monday. If not, thanks for listening to me all the same.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

I'm not 100% sure what this would look like in practice, could you possibly give an example?

So this is a fantastic idea. I'll think about something, but as of now I'm all for this.

Something like, Miles Davis said in reflection of his earlier work:

"So What" or Kind of Blue, they were done in that era, the right hour, the right day, and it happened. It's over."

Do we believe that the 'era' of jazz has passed, or is the genre still producing work that is as-good, if not better than the albums released in the golden age of jazz.

Assuming no periods of technical decline and/or collapse of civilization, how will the most prominent human society (be it here or amongst other star systems) of the year 3014 view the music released on Earth between 1950 and 2014? Which popular Western artists and BEA favorites do you think will still be well known amongst people the age you are today?

Is the above the sort of thing you are looking for?
