The longer I've been on BEA, the more I've viewed charts as a form of self expression. Unfortunately, what's being expressed is often quite obscure, even with detailed chart notes.

With that in mind, I present the chart study. For each chart I'm studying, I'll post a single thread where I ask the user questions about albums on their chart, with a goal of getting a coherent picture of their musical personality. In many ways, it will be similar to the user interviews, except that it will focus entirely on music and the interview will be conducted here on the forum (spanning a week or more). Other users should feel free to jump in with questions of their own. There's no definite endpoint, but I don't foresee going through full charts of 100 albums, we'll just have to play it by ear. Regardless, when I've finished questioning the user, I'll leave the thread open for other users to continue asking questions.

RepoMan has graciously agreed to be the guinea pig for the project, so take a look at his chart (link) and feel free to prepare some questions of your own. I'm going to start with his #1 album:

Pornography by The Cure

Norman recently described Pornography as having a "grand guignol" approach, a sentiment I would certainly echo. Even as a big fan of the Cure, this album has resisted me on several occasions, mainly just because of how overwhelmingly gloomy it is. You can imagine how surprised I am to see it topping the chart of BEA's sunniest user. Can you elaborate on your personal connection with this album and help us to understand why it continues to a be a go-to for you in times of adversity?

EDIT: Here are the notes for this album on his chart:

RepoMan wrote:
If I was insanely creative but epically depressed, angry & nihilistic, this is the album I would dream of making. I'm of huge fan of Sabbath, Slayer, Electric Wizard & all things heavy metal. But, I'm sorry. I know this is going to sound crazy. This is the angriest, scariest & heaviest album of all time!

I think this is a very good idea! I don't think we could really fully explain with words our musical personalities, expecially those that are more diverse, anyway this will be not only a good place for talking about albums but also to help users to find some of their musical directions. Smile

As for Pornography:

It works on the contrary for me. I'm not enthusiast about the Cure (I don't dislike them but neither like them very much), but this is the album I prob like the most by them. I'm far from having listened to their whole discography, though: it's the one I like the most among those I've heard. My favourite song is Siamese Twins.

As for Repo's chart, I'll just say I love it by now. Let's see his answer at your question then. Smile

Great idea sp4ce! Yeah Pornography has always stood out as (at the very least) the most striking cure album. Not sure I would call it my favorite but Repo's commentary on it really brings up some interesting points, and has inspired me to revisit, (it's been awhile)

(also I would happily volunteer to be guinea pig # 2)

Wonderful idea. Pornography was my first cure listen, actually, outside of singles, so it was definitely ... surprising. That sad, it's a beautiful album and probably my second favorite of their's behind Disintegration.

It doesn't matter if we all die

Very Happy OMG! I LOVE Pornography so fucking much. Just threw it on for like the thousandth time. One of the very few albums I never get tired of.

I love it precisely because it's so dramatic. So huge. So epic & sweeping. It holds NOTHING back. the swirling guitars. The crushing primitive drums. It's so emotional. And despite it's gloomy subject matter it's so ALIVE. So full of emotion. At the same time it's meditative and contemplative.

Robert Smith's vocal delivery on this album is so punk. Even more so than on his punk album - Three Imaginary Boys. Everything is enunciated in such a distinctive way and with such flair.

I just woke up so I'll write more later, but just wanted to encourage everyone to listen to it. The attention to detail on this album is exquisite - everything is there for a reason and adds to the ambience. Ironically, this album makes me feel totally alive!!!

Fantastic idea. Pornography is such a fascinating album, it takes influence from many different places, yet there's nothing quite like it. I'd also be down for one of these

The Cure is one band where I've enjoyed the albums I've heard so far (Disintegration and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and maybe one or two more I'm forgetting) but never dug into or loved unconditionally the way a lot of people do. Should I give Pornography a try as the next one I go for?

Also, I'd love to be next in line for this after the posters who are already accounted for.
