So Serengeti has been doing his Kenny Dennis character for a few years, but this really feels like the culmination of all of that work he's put into building that character, and it's definitely the most complete release featuring the fictional, ageing Chicagoan. The sense of regret throughout is palpable, and it makes for a record that is as touching as it is funny.
Leaning 95 right now. I like everything on the 13 album team quite a bit but don't love many of the singles (never gotten Charli XCX). 95 team I pretty much like all around though.
At this point (because it has come to my attention that some may find my post confusing) lemme just make clear that the last 5 videos are put there to put in some representation for the albums teams - I thought it could get messy if I put the videos above... But I might have been wrong. Don't mistake them for singles.
Anyway, stellar 1995 team, I honestly prefer the albums team to mine (but damn I do love my singles)
Magnificent matchup. I saw that 2013 team and was certain it would get my vote, until I scrolled down. The only thing I don't dig across either of the album teams is that Deerhunter record, but the team would still have got my vote in most other matches in the tournament regardless (that excellent Mazzy Star album, Serengeti's best, that crazy Fire! Orchestra record, and the otherworldly Innocence is Kinky - just a sublime selection), but 1995 contains two of the best albums of all-time, including one that is as good a contender as any for the title of my favourite, plus one of Bjork's best and D'Angelo's magnificent debut. I'm not sure I consider Maxinquaye to be the masterpiece that many do, but it's still a really dope album. Singles-wise, 'Oh Sheit, It's X!' is the best thing on either team (but it also means that we won't be seeing Apocalypse on any 2013 teams, which is a fucking tragedy), but 1995 has the edge in terms of consistency, with no songs that I don't consider at least very good. Voting 1995, whilst also giving mad props to 2013. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Well, both of these teams are loaded with great LPs. But I don't love the singles for 2013 nearly as much as Brooklyn Zoo. ODB for the win. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
