This, basically. I'm not biased against mainstream pop, I will give it a fair go, but a lot of it is shit.

I guess I'd qualify as a "poptimist", though the fact that there needs to be a trendy term for people who don't outright dismiss pop music is kind of sad, IMO.

Hey, Applerill is quite interesting and topical when he doesn't want to be an utter troll!

But the thing is, poptimism is all about NOT putting things in those boxes. It's about treating Carly Rae Jepsen with all the respect we give Mark Kozalek. It's about listening to hip-hop even if it's not "conscious". It's about not showing irritation when your girlfriend wants to have a deep discussion with you about Jason Derulo.

Many of these things seem pretty commonplace to us today, but a decade ago these concepts often seemed blasphemous to the music community. And even today when people talk about so much pop music, people will often stop by calling it "fun entertainment" instead of taking it seriously as true art.

I mean, my overall obviously has its share of legitimate problems, but look at all the people who give it negative scores just because it has Miley Cyrus and Brokencyde on it. It's their choice to not like that music, but it often seems like teenage boys get to hating these things by default. And poptimism is all about stopping those misperceptions.

You're right, but that doesn't stop certain members from making threads asking how to get their GF to stop listening to The Black Eyed Peas.

Anyway, I can't wait to see Jhereko's response to this, since he seas one of the first users to popularize poptimism here.
