"The City of Flowers and Sunshine" vs. "the Windy City"? There's only one right answer here. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
I should remind you, we're not voting on most summery city.
True. 'To Live and Die in L.A.' also happens to be a far more summery song, but then again I associate summer with warm, buttery, sweaty soul and funk and reggae and hip-hop, songs to soundtrack barbecues and slow, window-down car rides, as opposed to (admittedly fantastic) complex indie folk for sensitive boys afraid to bare their legs. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Meh, I don't know, a lot of hip hop, especially songs like this one, just seem too rough and dark to be really summery to me. Meanwhile, I think chicago, with it's lush and bright instrumentation and joyous music is everything that says summer to me.
The 2pac song should be the official song of Los Angeles. I hear such dreadful shit about that city, but the song deals with it so compassionately and it is really beautiful. I voted for it. I would vote for it in the best song-about-cities tournament, too.
Sufjan seems to be an odd thing to nominate on the surface but I do understand it. I would've understood more if that song about the summer camp and the wasps was nominated. I think it does have a place in the summersphere. But Chicago's roar seems so feeble in the context of this tournament despite working when you're in the SufjanSpace™.

This would be a pretty great idea for a tournament.
This one is tough. I don't love Tupac, but To Live and Die in L.A. is somewhat relatable to summers in Brooklyn in certain ways.
On the other hand, I've spent far more summers in Chicago than L.A. and I generally prefer the whimsy of Sufjan for my summer days. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
