These will be the threads started to discuss and list albums in these genres (strikethrough means the thread has been created)
Regional Music including, but not limited to African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and Latin
Jazz
Electronic
R&B and Soul (Funk)
Hip-Hop
Classical Music
Ambient
New Age
Avante-garde, Experimental, Field Recordings, Sounds and Effects
Blues
Country
Folk/Traditional
Dance
Easy Listening
Industrial Music
Pop
Punk
Metal
Rock
Psychedelia
Comedy & Spoken Word
Musical Theater and Entertainment
I may at this point do a better version of the regional music and split it out into the specific regions... makes more sense. Live and learn...
(looks like there was a Genre Extravaganza thread in the past, but I think that was discovering new sub-genre's etc, and this is best of the genre? Should this be moved to the games forum, even though we have games in the music forum all the time (sometimes more traction)?
I've never been a genre connoisseur. I've used them to find music in record shops, and that's about it. I may have made a pathetic chart or two.
Some of you though are indeed genre connoisseurs and know A LOT about certain genres and their sub-genres.
It was suggested this might be fun to do, but like an olympics of the top 3 albums (Gold, Silver, Bronze) of a genre. We could then move on to sub-genres.
So I'll put up a vote on which is your favorite genre, and then we can do a week per genre or something.
Also side note: holy shit on how many electronic sub-genres there are.
Further- if you have a strong argument for another root/parent classification not outlined below (like I'm adding classical to the list), feel free to do so... but don't add metal, because that is technically a sub-genre of rock according to this article... we can dig into that when we get into sub-genres? I'm open to suggestions, but I also find the organization of this article well thought out.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_p...sic_genres

You can only vote once in a poll so maybe list your top 3 you love the most and top 3 you want to learn the most about:

I prefer the genre tree of Rate Your Music to that of Wikipedia: https://rateyourmusic.com/rgenre/
As for structure, once we have the genre we're addressing determined, people could submit nominations of their top 10 albums - where #10 = 1 point and #1 = 10 points. The ten albums with the most points from these nominations could be in the running for the olympic medal for the genre, and then people could listen to all ten and rank the ten with the same points structure to determine the winners. _________________ Add me on RYM

Three I know a good deal about
1. Jazz
2. Rock
3. Classical
Three I want to explore further
1. Funk (new genre for our list? I do think of it as distinct from the soul/R&B from which it emerged)
2. African
3. Post Rock (another new entry? It sounds very different from rock to me)

Why don't we do top tens? Three seems very limited considering the work of getting this up and running.
I guess I don't care for the RYM macro-genres list, because there are at least three rock subgenres on there: punk, metal and psychedelica. All three of these get a lot more attention on this site than real macro genres like jazz, classical, folk, country and blues. The Wikipedia list seems more macro to me -- maybe we could just add the handful of true macro genres on the RYM list not on the Wikipedia one -- like new age -- to the Wiki one.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't singer-songwriter albums fall under either rock, folk or pop? Also ambient seems more like a subgenre -- though I'm no expert -- of electronic. Isn't ska just rock combined with Caribbean? Odd RYM lists Ska and not Reggae -- questionable.
I'm knowledgeable about:
1. Jazz
2. Rock
3. R&B (more classic R&B; counting soul and funk as subgenres)
Would love to see the results for the above genres other than rock.
Want to learn more about:
1. African
2. Blues
3. Classical
Overall, think this is a great idea for a "game."

This sounds like a lot of fun, and I look forward to it.....but I'm also already getting a headache anticpating the "____ Isn't a (insert genre) band!" arguments.
Genre is a fickle mistress....with a lot of angry suitors.
