I'm a history teacher. In an attempt to get to know my students better, I ask them a quick question each day as I take roll.
This past week, I borrowed one of the questions from our forum, here. I asked my students, "If you could invite anyone to dinner (living or dead), who would you invite?" (Yes, the original question was "for drinks," I believe...but, they're seventh graders.)
Anyway, I thought I'd share a few of the responses that were music artists:
Jimi Hendrix (4 students chose him)
Jimmy Page
John Lennon (6 students)
Paul McCartney (2 students)
Janis Joplin
Michael Jackson (3 students)
Janet Jackson
Eric Clapton (2 students)
Kirk Hammett
Neil Peart
Trent Reznor (2 students)
Carrie Underwood
Jennifer Nettles
Keith Moon
Katy Perry
Taylor Swift
Ozzy Osbourne (3 students)
Kurt Cobain (2 students)
Faith Hill
Drake
Lil' Wayne (2 students)
...and I even got one Frank Zappa!
Out of my 91 students, over 40% of them chose a music artist as the person they'd most like to meet!
What I found especially fascinating was how many of them chose artists who aren't exactly on the charts right now...and how many of them chose artists who are dead. Not just dead...but 30 and 40 years dead.
It's funny how many of the artists chosen would have been on my list as a 7th grader, too.
I just thought it was very interesting and I wanted to share the results of my little "experiment." _________________ Speakers of the House DJ

Cool idea Glad to see some teachers know what they're doing & make things interesting. My history teacher last year just talked about lame-ass canadian history, and how her iphone is amazing.
But, for 7th graders, these are crazy responses:

Like, seriously crazy responses! Especially the Trent mention. (perhaps the 2 were friends who just happened to stumble among him, and shared his music?) Cause I don't even think I know anyone in my high school who could even name a NIN song
The Lennon one is obviously popular...., same with Jackson & Hendrix.
Were Moon & Peart on the same list? Just out of curiosity. My grandfather taught Peart how to play drums, which I've always been proud of having in my family background
The only thing that would have astounded me would be if someone mentioned Jeff Mangum _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

91 students? wow, elementary school has grown since finishing it hasn't it?
anyway, interesting responses. But I swear if one of those kids said Jeff Mangum I would have thrown both my copy's of ITAOTS onto the street to be run over by the next passing car.
ok not really but I know somebody in the world would _________________ sig

Frank Zappa suprises me, I didn't know about him till about year 8 and even than i didn't know much about him.
The John Lenno and Hendrix dosen't suprise me, rock fans around that age quite rightly hail them as brilliant.

I was a huge NIN fan in eighth grade. And that was before I was serious about music.
