Music Nerds Unite podcast on Spotify.

This is my brothers music podcast, Music Nerds Unite. He founded it with his buddy Matt.

The first set of podcasts were an artist tournament, with brackets for the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, culminating in the selection of the best artist of all time.

The attached podcast (well, it was attached but I can’t post links yet since this is my first post. It is episode 14) is me and our friend Larry filling in for Matt, with Scott. The latest series is for the best album of all time. This episode is the first round of the 60s. 16 albums. One album per artist allowed in the tournament. The next episode will be the 70s.

This is my first post in the forum, but as you’ll hear, seeding for the tournament was done by BEA rankings.

Give a listen to this episode, and circle back to earlier episodes as well. Interested in the feedback from this very educated community. We can take it.

My brother Scott has dedicated a lot of his time and energy to music and knowing everything there is, and sharing his thoughts. His book “ The Story Of Rock and Soul Music: Album Reviews and Lists” is on Amazon.

Hopefully I’m not breaking any rules with this post.

Smile

Keith.

Why on earth would you bring that up? Are you desperately trying to be funny?

I’m sorry. It was probably wrong of me to immediately assume this was spam.

In any case, I really don’t think the BEA database is the best way to do one of these tournaments. It’s way too based on popularity (see: That Objectivity in Music thread on the front page now)

We pick the albums first. Then just seed them based on BEA. But then we pick winners on our judgement.

Give a listen first.

That's great. Applause

For the record, Imma chose for myself each record

Revolver (although it's probably a tie)
Electric Ladyland
In The Court of The Crimson King
Highway 61
The Doors
Pet Sounds
Astral Weeks (although that's also a tie)
VU&N

Good picks. Smile

Of course, it’s all personal preference, so there can be no wrong picks.

Not spam. And like I said above, BEA is only used to do the initial seeding of the tournament. That’s why revolver matches against Byrd brothers. But it doesn’t determine who wins. We do. Smile

And I just read the objectivity thread. Good points in there. And I think it’s great to have multiple perspectives. If people either absolutely love an album or hate an album, it’s helpful to know that perspective, as opposed to it just averaging out to average. So cross referencing gives broader perspective on albums. I’d want to listen to see which camp I fall into, instead of dismissing it because it’s “average”.

But yes, the popularity trap is also real. So is groupthink. And we all are biased by it.

Anyway, the podcast itself is fueled by my brothers obsessive knowledge of the history of music (again, see the book he wrote), and these recent episodes of album tournament are just our individual reflections on each album, with majority rules determining what album moves to the next round.
