He's an old-school 'digging in the crates' type. He'd spend hours rummaging through records looking for the perfect sample, and could layer them as well as anyone. It's relatively simple stuff, but he's probably one of the two or three greatest golden era boom bap producers. Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop (his 1992 album) is seminal.

Yeah, but the beats were wicked. The 'Summertime' beat is one of my all-time favourites, and Jazzy Jeff's The Return of the Magnificent album is great. It was meant as a compliment.
