And Alcest... I mean, just listen. They mix shoegaze, post-rock and dreampop, and the lead singer believes his music is actually energy channeling through him from a mystical "fairy dimension".

Crikey... there's loads I can think of, and I'm not sure if the thread is talking about "Western rock/pop sung in a different language" or "World Music", so will split sections. But to cut through the chaff and get to the wheat:
ROCK/POP
GORKY'S ZYGOTIC MYNCI (early, when still on Ankst Records) - Welsh
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS (whole of Myng, and a couple of LP tracks here and there) - Welsh
EL GUINCHO - Spanish
KENT - Swedish (worth checking out if you like U2)
FITNESS FOREVER - Italian
JUNIPER MOON - Spanish (in fact worth checking out the entire Elefant back cat for a plethora of Spanish indie-pop)
JUDY & MARY - Japanese
HANA & PETR ULRYCHOVI - Czech psyche!!! See below - truly astonishing (was actually banned by the Communist government there and didn't see the light of day until Hasselhoff caused the Berlin Wall to fall down)
WORLD MUSIC
TINARIWEN - Tuareg
CORNERSHOP (odd LP track, whole of latest album) - Punjabi
GROUP DOYEH - Arabic
ASHA BHOSLE et al - Hindi (there's a terrific 70s Bollywood CD - all pastiches of funk and soul, plus of course Jimmy Jimmy Aaja which M.I.A covered)
and then... for the very brave... the crazy, crazy world of THAI FUNK!
Big kudos to whoever mentioned Konono No.1 and all the Tropicalia stuff, by the way... great choices![/youtube]
They switch between singing in English and Japanese, but you can't really understand the lyrics anyways. They do have a pretty cool sound; sort of a Pixies-surf rock thing.
I'm not sure how many people actually care for the recommendations posted in this thread, but I still have many more to go
Here's a song by a Croatian band called Stijene, from an album that is already in BEA database. It's called Let (Flight) and it's amazing, if you ask me. From 1982:
Another one, from 1984, by Luna. Also in BEA database (the only album they have made), but I haven't heard the album yet.. I really really need to get it ASAP...
I guess it's only appropriate that I'm the one who keeps reviving this thread...
So lately I'm going through another phase of listening to a lot of ex yugo music, particularly stuff I haven't heard yet. Here are three songs I discovered just recently:
god they're so amazing... Every new thing I listen by them is fantastic
a 1973 yugoslav classic. It's from a concept album, and I think I'm gonna have to get it soon... (then again, all of the songs are on youtube, so I'm not in a hurry)
