I just finished a huge argument with my dad. While it covered a lot of topics, the one that really got us up in arms and pushed us both over the edge was consciousness. My dad argued that consciousness is proof of a god. He said that because we're made of the same "matter of the earth" (his quote) that, if consciousness isn't something that was given out by a god, then there's no reason that computers and other computing devices aren't conscious as well. I argued that computing doesn't necessarily equate to consciousness and that we just don't understand how consciousness exists yet, but we're working on it. He maintained that either both us and the computers were conscious or God did it. I told him that was stupid. We repeated our same arguments for a bit, and then the personal attacks came in, and we both lost our cool. He was just really unprofessional, his arguments were quite awful, and he constantly gave me shit about being offensive. I'm just really sick of him and needed to write about it somewhere. Thanks for reading, if you did.
Yikes! Sounds like college can't come soon enough. Enjoy the dorms.
You and your parents have different views about a few things... a little space will make those differences less relevant, and everyone will appreciate each other more.
Now go throw on your headphones and listen to some Fugazi or Nine Inch Nails.
Probably crap advice but when two people have two completely different opinions on something and they're being stubborn about them, it's probably best just to ignore it, don't talk about it like. Neither of you is going to change your mind so just tell your dad you respectfully disagree but you don't want to argue about it, agree to disagree you know. _________________ Shut up mate you're boring!
