Interestingly enough I don't think I saw a thread about this.

I guess I'll this thread with an anecdote.
I grew up in a very conservative, Protestant Christian home. As a result, any music that was not Christian was considered worldly and sinful. That is why I didn't really discover my love for music, particularly heavy metal and rock n roll at that time, until right around 7th grade. Since then I've found that religion had held me back from what has become my greatest musical passion. It is also the reason why I have to limit myself to digital copies of my music rather than having physical copies. I've had to hide music from my close-minded dad and it has just been easier to hide files and an ipod from him rather than a collection of CD's/vinyl/what-have-you

Yeesh. If I was only able to listen to Christian music, I imagine I would have felt pretty depressed and isolated. I was raised in a Christian household but thankfully censorship wasn't a tenet of my parents' beliefs.

Quote:
One of the most dangerous ways Homosexuality invades family life is through popular music. Parents, please keep careful watch over your children’s listening habits. Especially in this age of Internet mp3 piracy.
There are multiple levels of Gay Music. Some bands are what we like to call Gateway Bands. They lure children in with Pop Grooves and Salacious Melodies leaving them wanting more. They’ll move on to more dangerous bands and the next thing you know you’ve got a homosexual for a child.
We’ve taken the time to highlight the bands that are particularly Gay. Please take the time and dissect your child’s CD / iTunes catalog. If you find 3 or more of these bands in their collection it is time to take action.
We Strongly recommend that you burn the CDs. Make sure your child is watching. Make sure they can feel the heat. It is crucial that the image remains emblazoned in their young minds. They need to know that if they continue to listen to these bands they may Burn eternally as well.

It wasn't necessarily religion that held you back, it was your family. I'm not religious myself, but my most devout friend (he's joining the clergy) is a huge Marilyn Manson fan. His favourite album is Antichrist Superstar.

Most radical Christian try to use this justification for such censorship from Psalms 101.3:
I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me
...which, in it's context, really just means don't live vicariously through sinners, because it's as bad as sinning.

lol @ HigherThan's list. Ted Nugent? When I hear Ted Nugent pump on about gun ownership I don't think about homosexuality, I think about penis over-compensation.

I wish HigherThan's list was parody. It's not. It's scary that there are such asinine, close-minded people out there. Frightened morons like that make religion look really stupid.

Embarassed

I'd say thank goodness... but sadly, while this case may be parody, others are not. There are some scary views out there. A quick search of Westboro Baptists Church is an alarming place to start.
