Before these Guys, you had Syd Barrett. You had Zappa. You had Safe As Milk. You were about to have the Red Krayola. You had Arthur Lee. You had the Monks. You had the Elevators.
And you had ALL THIS AMAZING AVANT-JAZZ LIKE ERIC DOLPHy!!!!

Do NOT tell me these guys invented avant-garde.
this is wrong. just factually wrong. the Velvets formed and began playing together in '65, making them at least the contemporaries of all of the rock artists you've listened. i don't know if you can give credit to the foundation of avant-garde structures in rock (which has nothing to do with avant-garde jazz), but this band certainly were not followers. before is the wrong word to use
as for the album, it is fantastic. not as great as White Light/White Heat but still pretty awesome. and all of this is subjective, but I believe it is as influential as it commonly regarded to be
EDIT: i wouldn't call thing album "avant-garde" as well, of course...i objected to the above poster's implication that this band simply ripped other 60's artists, which is ridiculous

A true masterpiece and one of my favorite albums of all time. What I think is its most amazing aspect is the change of moods throughout, from noisy to accessible, from tender to raw, from poetry to simplicity, or sometimes containing both. Heroin is one of the greatest songs ever composed and written (Lou Reed... man, what a lyricist, at least until Lulu came), and Sunday Morning comes pretty close to that too. IMO I think it should be included in the site's Top 10.
