I thought this best belonged in the Politics thread. I was having a discussion with another user, so I thought I would bring in the people who post YouTube videos here on BEA. Do you think YouTube is illegal? And why so? Is it STEALING? Is posting the videos illsgal? Is VIEWING the vids illegal?

YouTube is not illegal. The posting of many, if not most, of those videos is illegal, however.

Exactly. In fact, why are there shows that can be viewed on YouTube for free, such as Frasier and many Disney movies, when there are also taken off of YouTube becsuse of legal issues? Obviously, some companies allow their shows put on YouTube because they are already making enough money and they don't care. So, YouTube is not illegal. Neither is posting or viewing things on it.

You are so naive. It's almost cute.

Youtube isn't illegal just as torrents aren't illegal. It's posting copyrighted stuff that's illegal, just as torrenting copyrighted stuff is illegal. If someone posts an episode of Fraser online without the copyright holder's consent, it's illegal.

It's a whole other discussion whether it's ethically correct or not to pirate stuff - that's a more interesting question.

This. But I'm pretty sure there's an old thread about this already, so don't make another one, JMan.

VCRs, DVD Players, and Computers can all play bootleg movies if someone puts one on/in it. Are VCRs, DVD Players, and Computers illegal?

Actually, don't bother answering. As much as I'd love to keep this extremely topical thread running, I can already smell trouble so I'm nipping this one in the bud.
