It's pretty good. I've yet to truly fall deeply for it. But it has gobs of creativity and loads of charm. It's got melodies out the ass and cool instrumentation by da boatload. It's got quirky and literate lyrics and its got some great stuff going for it. No doubt about it. It's also continuing to rise and rise on the overall. Last year when this was aotd it was like 96 or something. Now it's 80. That alright I guess.

And as I randomly said last year when it was just 1 spot ahead of The Moon and Antarctica on the decade chart, this is not nearly as great as The Moon And Antarctica! Random? Yes.

Now I will wait for Lethalnezzle to jump in and say "it's not as good as Supreme Clientele either, but what does that have to do with it?".

I've found Sufjan Stevens difficult to listen to in the past. Whats artists would you say Sufjan Stevens sounds like? Is Illinois the best for you?

This was one of the first albums I ever discovered here and it's the first one I loved the hell out of. Used to be my favourite album of all time but that slowly dropped. I still really like it and I don't think I could ever let it go from my overall chart.

As for is this his best, yeah either this is Age Of Adz. Also Michigan is cool.

To me, Stevens sounds quite like Belle & Sebastian with a denser orchestration, on this, or earthier Deserter's Songs-era Mercury Rev. Maybe solo Jónsi, too (though I don't like Go). Tbh I think he really managed to create his own sound here. It's my favorite, yes, but I owe Michigan another listen, I love Seven Swans a lot too (and it's very different, much more acoustic and intimate), and I haven't listened to The Age Of Adz yet.

It's magical, it's fresh. A great discovery ! Like Mercury said, it's not as good as it used to be, but it's still great.

Good to hear.

Missing Belle & Sebastian these past years. Plus solo Jónsi did put out a good album.

My #1 by quite a margin.

This album is best listened to on a bright, temperate, beautiful day. I listen to this at least 2 times a week whilst walking around the industrial area of where I live (Lake Mary, Florida). It's cool for that it's grassy and there are joyous people taking in the not only the atmosphere, but the serenity of life. When I play Illinois, I feel like I'm with my future wife walking through an area shaded by trees on a sunny Spring/Summer day.

For the album itself, it's downright gorgeous. The flow is brilliant, Sufjan's lyricism/concept is on point, the instrumentation is blissful, this is as close to "perfect" as an album can get.

The length may hinder the first listen or two, however, with further grasp of the melodies, stories, and overall tact that this album gives, this becomes addictive.

I wouldn't change a thing.

Key Tracks:

1. Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
3. Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part I: The World's Columbian Exposition – Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me In A Dream)
4. John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
5. Jacksonville
7. Decatur, Or, Round Of Applause For Your Stepmother! 9. Chicago
10. Casimir Pulaski Day
15. The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us!
16. They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhh!
19. The Seer's Tower
20. The Tallest Man, The Broadest Shoulders: Part I: The Great Frontier/Part II: Come To Me Only With Playthings Now
21. Riffs And Variations On A Single Note For Jelly Roll, Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, And The King Of Swing, To Name A Few
