Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.4/100, a mean average of 78.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.8.

Not quite as excellent as the three albums that came before it, Day For Night displays a band that is less concerned about hit singles. I've been reading a book on the band and the biographer chose to label this as a bit of a stoner rock record. I feel like I would agree with that.
Key tracks: Grace Too, Nautical Disaster, Fire in the Hole, Scared, An Inch an Hour and Titanic Terrarium

Often tempted to think that this really is their best album, chock full of great songs punctuated with slower, denser music that is equally great, and maybe richer: songs like Yawning or Snarling, So Hard Done By and Impossibilium. ND is their best song and Grace Too is not far behind. Altogether very rich.
Slightly darker in tone than Fully Completely, this is a mature album that, while not matching the quality of its predecessor, is a worthy follow up. My only complaint is with "Scared" which always seemed a half-baked rehash of "Wheat Kings", stumbling around for far too long without a payoff.

Greasy, yes. A jungle, yes, also. To paraphrase j-dog, other albums are the Hip at their most this or that... but this is the Hip at their most brilliant. Truly, a stab at greatness. If you listen to this and don't get this, well, it's just you.

Day for Night was the album the Tragically Hip had long attempted produce. Hints from previous albums including the pacing and cohesiveness of Road Apples with the exceptional songwriting of Fully Completely come together here as the band's masterpiece. In addition to the retrospective approach, this is a band looking into the future and moving forward by focusing their sound with a greater emphasis on Gord Downie's painstakingly clever lyrics infused with the now classic Hip style. While "Grace, Too" may be the standout track on this record, the exceptional run from "Fire in the Hole" to "Scared" is unparalleled in the Hip's catalogue.

The Hip showing depth. Other albums are catchier, rock harder, or seem more clever, but this one has the most emotional rawness, the most technical subtleties, and the most original sound. Close to their best. Well done, boys.
One of my fav Hip, the singles are good, the rest is good. 'Nautical disaster' is a fav.

This is a rich collection of music that goes in a lot of different directions. I have heard people argue that this is the Hip's best album and I see why one might say that. Thugs, Nautical Disaster, Scared, Greasy Jungle, Grace, Too. And the last three tracks anticipate the band's later maturation into poets laureate of the best country on the planet.
