I revisited this album recently because I decided to go through Portal's entire studio album discography. After finally reaching Ion, I believe that this album is a perfect culmination of their work. The surreal and horrifying avant-garde, technical, and blackened death metal sound they are known for is still there, but it's produced much cleaner than their previous albums. Vexovoid and Seepia in particular had moments where it sounded completely muddy, but Ion sounds clear enough to make out the instrumentation, while still nailing that otherworldly feel. All that, while maintaining that alien, metaphysical, and somewhat paranormal aesthetic Portal is known for, makes Ion an endlessly interesting listen.

I'm probably missing something here, I think it's my soul. This album aggressively sucked it out from me.

I'm certainly not missing anything here. Terrifying and brilliant at the same time
Is there something I am missing, I've listened to this 8+ times and I still don't enjoy as much as I think I should.
