Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.3/100, a mean average of 69.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.6.

A super underrated album in Interpol's discography — probably my 4th favorite Interpol record, just behind El Pintor (the other two being fairly obvious). I actually really enjoy the lo-fi, gritty production style on this record. It's pretty different from Interpol's signature sound, which is actually refreshing. "Number 10" is also becoming one of my favorite Interpol songs, along with IYRLN. Really solid album from start to finish.
An unfairly maligned album in the band's discography. There are not many heights on the album but not many lows either. It's a solid record that suffers from some subpar production. In this case the low fi tinge helps in some aspects. A solid album from a band coming up on 20 years of work.
The album is badly produced, but has six good songs:
- If You Really Love Nothing
- The Rover
- Complications
- Nysmaw
- Number 10
- It Probably Matters
I loved it upon release, but it hasn't aged well. Some tracks are great, but the rest is really forgettable
Not a necessarily a bad record, but pretty underwhelming to be honest. The album has its moments here and there, but it just feels like Interpol isn't willing to take risks or try anything new. As a result, the sound can end up feeling a bit stale. It's a bit of a shame, since I do like Interpol. But again, the album is not all bad, and there are a few tracks that I thoroughly enjoy, such as "The Rover." I still think Interpol has potential to put out another great record, but to be honest, this does not live up to that potential. Don't mean to sound too negative, but these are just my thoughts after giving this multiple listens. Well, here's hoping for the next one!
If you ignore the context of Interpol's past, this is a solid record.
Solid
This album is so weirdly defiant. There's a bulk of the album that struggles to find any untouched ideas within the Interpol sound, often settling of esoteric songwriting instead of good songwriting. The best moments are when they're doing something entirely familiar, or something that actually feels like the band is trying to sound like anyone other than themselves. There's a strong start and a solid last leg, but ultimately, the record is bogged down by an anonymous middle.
This album is such a drag. those 45 minutes felt like well over an hour. safe, and uninspired.
Another comment used the word "safe". Can't think of a better way to describe it. Listenable but nothing new.
