Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.1/100, a mean average of 67.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 67.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 23.8.

Say what you will about Garth Brooks, but his fame and success influenced so many people and changed the forces of commercial country music.

No Fences is basically the Thriller of commercial country, and it's a decent listen all the way through. Brooks makes his music accessible, with one foot in country roots and the other one squarely in pop music. There's even some nice balladry here, especially on Victim of the Game.

Both No Fences and Mary Chapin-Carpenter's Come On Come On LP took country crossover-appeal to levels that hadn't been seen since Rosanne Cash's Seven Year Ache LP. Sadly, there are hardly any attempts in Nashville to appeal to the average listener, and would rather double-down on culture-oriented "bro-country" than appeal to someone outside of those circles.

Recommended.

I can't help but like this record. Great songwriting, good musicianship and great vocals.

It is a little over processed, losing the raw roots of country... but damn, can Garth Brooks write catchy country. Thunder Rolls and Friends in Low Places are country music landmarks.

One of the few country albums I know of that is a good listen top to bottom. Garth was the biggest country act ever back in the day and this was his best work.

This might have been something completely new when it was released, but today it just sounds like any new-traditionalist country album, a bit too slow, a bit too smooth. The album that followed is the one that keeps Garth's name in the ranks. Friends in Low Places still is the track that sticks out from this outing.
