Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 11% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.8/100, a mean average of 74.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.4.

I saw Torres play live in Atlanta in support of this album; I think it must have been at the Variety Playhouse, opening for Okkervil River. It was a bit of a subdued performance, and I'm not so sure most of those attending were paying much attention. Which is a shame, because this self-titled debut is a really strong piece of work--albeit one that shows its warts, with moments that feel off-key and off-kilter. At its best, this album uses those moments to reinforce the songs' subject matter, as in "Honey": "Honey, while you were ashing in your coffee / I was thinking ‘bout telling you / What you’ve done to me / Honey, pretending like it never happened / Come over here and let me / Put you back together." Something about that feeling of mutual brokenness really can make for good art.
So intense, so strong, so weak.
a good report of suffering for love
Fairly good album. Some average tracks in the middle.
Great album. The minimalist production really matches the straightforward, often stark lyrics. Really quite emotionally affecting at times ('Honey' and 'November Baby' especially touched me, but I found the whole album very sincere and mostly pretty sad). It was something I wasn't really expecting to enjoy, so it's safe to call it a very pleasant surprise.
