Già dalle prime note dell'iniziale "Homecoming queen" si capisce che Mark Linkous non era un personaggio allegro ma piuttosto inquieto, tormentato. E la musica dei suoi Sparklehorse ( praticamente un alias… ) è tutta così: malinconica, spesso struggente, a tratti fisica ma comunque sempre contenuta, che fa più rumore con i silenzi che con le note. In questo album del 1995 ci sono almeno tre grandi canzoni ( quella già citata, "Weird sisters" e "Rainmaker" ), ma tutto il disco è degno di rappresentare quel decennio…

Sad and intense.
Beautiful songs between acoustic, low-fi and indie rock.

For me, Good Morning Spider was powerful and immediate. Not so with this album. It took a while before I realized how incredible the record actually is. But now that I love it, (and I really, truly, absolutely LOVE it) I can say with confidence that it's on par with his other masterpiece.
For any two albums by the same band to reach my top 20, they have to be an incredibly creative and talented group, approaching genius.
This is the work of a solo artist.

I can't remember the last time I gave an album a 90 on first listen. I think the last time was Blue, which ended up as my number 1 album.
This is just incredible songwriting, the lo-fi aspect serves to enhance the emotions presented in the words and the music and isn't there just for the sake of it, which is often the case. At the beginning I was thinking "this is really nice, but I wish it was a little louder and more involved." And then that happened! There's tons of variety here, cool filler tracks, louder alternative rock-ish tracks and soft folkier tracks. It's got everything I could every want from an album.
Like a fleeting dream. Something you wouldn't want to wake from.
