Over their first three albums, the Black Lillies mutated from a bluegrass-inflected Americana band into something much closer to a CMA-friendly Nashville country outfit. I'm not going to say that's necessarily praise, but what I appreciate about them is that during this evolution they never really compromised the quality of their songwriting or musicianship. Indeed, there's not much of a dropoff in quality from 100 Miles of Wreckage to this one, and the best tracks here--I'm thinking especially of "Baby Doe" and "All This Living"--are among the best of Cruz Contreras and company's career. I wouldn't want to hear them tack too much further into straight-up Nashville country territory, but this album is genuinely enjoyable, with highly professional storytelling, production, and overall consistency.
