Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The source of a lot of hits that I don't much care for and didn't even know were hers. They hit the indifferent middle ground in me every artist should avoid to hit in any listener.
A decent pop album makes for a diverting 40 minutes. She has a nice voice and the production is fresh enough for her to have some decent hits come out of this record , I'd call that a success.
A decent-enough pop album from Ariana, most songs aren't bad at all and I can imagine a lot of them as singles. With this album filled with chart hits, she cemented herself firmly in the mainstream pop landscape. Job done.
Basically more of a producer's album than an Ariana Grande album, kind of sacrifices the more gentle close-to-the-heart songs of Yours Truly for basically one big confetti-canon of a pop banger after another that we get here. It just gets really tiresome far too quickly, despite all the attention to cutting-edge detail. Ariana's got a great voice, but I don't really get who she is or artistically what she's trying to achieve at this point, other than trying very hard to be the next Reigning Queen of Pop, which may reveal too easily her musical, if not vocal, limitations.
I had to listen to this a second time before I could actually notice anything good. Some songs like Break Free are very good, others are bad. Overall, it's a mixed bag, but a mature improvement from her boring début album.
